Learn in the Classroom

You can study RYA Basic Navigation and Safety RYA Day Skipper, RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore and RYA Yachtmaster Ocean with Andante Yachting. Click on the underlined words for more detail.

We teach full courses, learning days and tutorial programmes focussed on key topics (often in conjunction with a correspondence course). They are all described below. Click on the underlined words for more detail.

Full courses

We normally schedule these courses to meet the needs of a small group. This has the advantage that we can tailor the teaching to the skill levels and aptitudes of the group’s members. We can also mix some self-study with the classroom sessions if this is appropriate.

If you can find a suitable teaching location we may well be able to teach there rather than at our base.

The cost of a course depends to some extent on the syllabus, duration, location and schedule. Basic Navigation and Safety - 2 day course £ 170.00 per person. For the Day Skipper course, budget around £ 350.00 per person. For the Coastal Skipper & Yachmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean, budget around £ 400.00 per person.

Our minimum charge assumes that there are two people on the course and teaching is at our base. A third and fourth attendee pay the normal rate per person. For a class size of five upwards we will discuss your requirements in detail, agree a ‘rate for the job’ and provide a written quotation and teaching plan.

Learning days

You may want a day’s teaching rather than a full course. We regularly teach in this way on a ‘one on one’ and small group basis. The teaching can be focussed on your objectives and recent examples include meteorology, tides and specific parts of astro navigation.

Teaching can be here or at your home or office. £ 80.00 per person for one day with a minimum charge as though there were two people attending. We will provide you with a quotation on request.

Tutorial programmes

We’ve run these programmes for a number of years and if you can travel to us you will benefit from classroom teaching in small groups. The teaching is scheduled and structured and has two main objectives:
  • To help correspondence students who can travel to us and want to be part of a small peer group of people studying the same course.
  • To provide ‘top up’ teaching for anyone who has missed evening class sessions or wants more teaching on a subject.
Students tell us that they like and value this approach because they:
  • Receive a ‘fast introduction’ to a topic. This reduces the time they need to spend when starting a new subject. Class sizes are small - typically between four and six people and never more than eight.
  • Have really good (self study) notes as reference material when working on the coursework in their own time.
  • Work to a planned study programme over a sensible (three month) period. This approach particularly suits busy people who have pressure on their time.

General notes:

  • You need to reserve just six or seven specific evenings rather than the twenty or more for a conventional evening class.
  • You can choose whether to sign up for individual sessions that are convenient for you or for the whole programme.
  • The rest of the course and all homework is completed at your convenience and you must schedule enough time for this.
  • Classes start at 19:30 and end at about 21:45.
  • Day Skipper classes are held on Tuesday evenings and Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore are held on Wednesday evenings.
