VHF Radio – Short Range Certificate (SRC)

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is now operational on a worldwide basis. Its main purpose is to enhance the way that a vessel in distress can call for help. GMDSS also brings together a number of different marine systems to improve communication and safety at sea.

The VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC) is your key to using GMDSS legally, effectively and properly. We run full and upgrade courses and examinations. Details are below.

VHF Radio . Short Range Certificate (SRC) - Full Course £ 85.00 per person plus the RYA’s administration fee

This is a one-day course which covers:
  • General knowledge of radiotelephone communications.
  • Detailed working knowledge of radio equipment.
  • Operational procedures of the GMDSS and detailed practical operation of GMDSS subsystems and equipment.
  • Operational procedures and regulations for VHF radiotelephone communications.
At Andante Yachting we provide computer based simulators, voice practice equipment including real (but modified for training use) radios to give you lots of hands-on training. Our equipment levels far exceed the minimum requirements. This is because we, and our students, think that ‘hands-on’ practice is probably the most important part of the course.

The course fee includes:
  • Our comprehensive course notes.
  • A copy of RYA booklet G22.
  • Assessment and exam.
  • Light refreshments.

Notes

  • VHF courses are normally run at our base.
  • Courses start promptly at 09:00 and normally end by about 18:00.
  • There is some pre-course homework.
  • To obtain the SRC you will need to bring a passport photograph plus a credit card, cheque or cash to pay the RYA’s administration fee of £22.
  • We ask you to bring your own lunch.
  • The course fee includes VAT.
  • Class size is limited to around eight people.

VHF Radio . Short Range Certificate (SRC) - Upgrade Course £ 70.00 per person plus the RYA’s administration fee

If you already have a VHF Authority to Operate then you can upgrade your existing certificate. Our approach is to offer you a place on the full course but at a reduced price.

This has proven to be very popular and successful since it gives you the opportunity to ‘brush up’ your previous knowledge and extend it with the new GMDSS material.

You’ll need to bring your ‘Authority to Operate’ with you on the day to benefit from this offer. In all other respects this is the same as the full course and the notes above are fully applicable

VHF Radio . Short Range Certificate (SRC) - Examination Only £ 45.00 per person plus the RYA’s administration fee

We are always pleased to run ‘examination only’ assessments on an individually scheduled basis.

The assumption is that you know your voice and DSC procedures and that no teaching is required. This is a fairly short assessment (about one and a half hours).

Schedules and bookings

We often schedule extra courses, usually for small groups or even on a ‘one to one’ basis. The minimum price is as though there were three on a full SRC course and normal rates apply for the fourth and subsequent attendees. There’s no need for a course of this sort to be run at our base. We can travel to you if you have adequate facilities
